So begins Man and Boy, Tony Parson's foray into fiction. Or non-fiction. Rumoured to be a roman à clef, the well-known journalist and broadcaster writes the story of a successful TV executive who brings up his child alone after a failed marriage--much like Parson's own life.

Harry Silver, the book's anti-hero, has it all: a beautiful wife, an angelic son and a high-paying job. His life is just about perfect, until one night he casually sleeps with a slim redheaded coworker who has "that kind of fine Irish skin that is so pale it looks as though it has never seen the sun". After the fateful night, his life falls apart. He loses his job and his wife in rapid succession, and finds himself a single, unemployed parent. It is an excellent education for a man who up until now has been immature and irresponsible, and Parsons has some strong points to make about the puerility of far too many contemporary males: "Being a man is like being chained to the village idiot." At times he piles on the disasters and plot-twists a little too thickly, but the ending is wildly romantic, redemptive and optimistic. In other words, Harry grows up. -- Christopher Hart




Bewertung: - Eine positive Überraschung
Eigentlich habe ich das Buch nur aus Nostalgie gekauft, da ich Tony Parsons vor fast 30 Jahren als Schreiber für die britische Musikzeitschrift NME sehr geschätzt habe. Zu meiner Überraschung entwickelte sich daraus ein sehr unterhaltsames und lebenskluges Buch. Es ist keine grosse Literatur, aber wirkt natürlich und frisch aus dem Leben gegriffen. Der Erzählstil ist modern, oft wirklich witzig und auch in den emotionalen Momenten weitgehend unkitschig.
Vergleichen lässt sich das Buch ein wenig mit den ersten drei Romanen von Nick Hornby, bleibt aber im direkten Vergleich doch ein wenig zurück. Ich würde es als gute Unterhaltungslektüre im besten Sinn qualifizieren.

Bewertung: - Nette Geschichte, aber.......
.........mehr eben auch nicht. Parsons erzählt eine Geschichte, die 1000 vor ihm auch schon erzählt haben: das Scheitern einer Beziehung, ein alleinerziehender Vater, die neue Liebe. Und er erzählt es eben auch nicht besser oder spannender als all die Autoren vor ihm. Die Geschichte hat wenig Charme und Witz. Dass Parsons mit Hornby verglichen wird, ist für mich ein Rätsel. Hornby ist um Längen besser.

Bewertung: - fathers, read this book
I bought this book two years ago, started to read it and put it aside after a few pages. Why? Because I was going through a divorce, was heart broken and had exactly the same experience with my little daughter. And I did not want to further indulge in revisting my pain by reading this book. Last weekend I picked this book up again. Most of the pain behind me I wanted to know how the two heroes eventually managed their separation process. It is the first time that I almost fully identify myself with a fictional character, altough the happy ending of the book is not realistic. Not after only more or less six month of separation. Ok, the author needed to cater for the romantic readers as well. But, please next time, Mr Parsons, put more efforts in the ending of your book.
Thank you nonetheless for really touching my heart and for letting me feel less alone with my own similar situation.

Bewertung: - I thoroughly enjoyed it!
A heart-rending and funny account of the disintegration of the nuclear family triggered by a 30-year-old husband's dissatisfaction with himself and misconception about love and commitment.
The novel reverberates with the high tension of 'Kramer versus Kramer':hostilities, frustrations and the typically painful lashing out at each other with a 4-year-old son caught in the midst of flying tempers and conflicting aspirations.
It's narrated from the refreshingly unusual perspective of the father figure. His is a flippant, humorous voice, partly self-deluding but disarmingly honest when uncovering his insecurities and shortcomings.
The occasionally repetitive style is well-chosen to mirror a human being's tumultuous and obsessive search for love, recognition and meaningful relationships.

Bewertung: - Tiefschürfend - kurzweilig - ehrlich
Obwohl mein Englisch nicht top ist, habe ich dieses Buch in kurzer Zeit gelesen. Vielleicht ist es eher für Eltern als für Singles geeignet, vielleicht ist manchem die Sprache zu deftig (sehr viel Umgangssprache), aber nach einiger Zeit wird man gepackt und mag das Buch nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Und danach mag man es nicht mehr vergessen...
