Not to Ruth Rendell, of course, who has written some excellent novels, but perhaps to Inspector Wexford, who, as other critcs have mentioned, seems tired and strangely out of touch with current times. Almost nothing is right in this installment of the popular series: The crime is implausible, characters are not drawn emotionally believable or too shallow, the subplot, i.e. Wexford's personal problem with his daughtr, is ridiculously close to the main storyline. The police people here seem strangely antiquated. I really love Rendell's Wexford stories and the stuff she wrote under the pen-name Vine, but fans can really give this one a miss. You won't miss much.

This is the third book I read of the Wexford series. I like Rendells style in writing and the portraying of her characters. In this book she tries to go into surrogacy. I think she kind of overdoes things a little, as not only is surrogacy a key point in the two murders that have taken place, it coincidentely also affects Wexford's own family, since his daugther is acting as surrogate mom for the new wife of her ex husband.
There's another kind of romantic byplot concerning Detective Sergeant Hannah Goldsmith and one of her co workers, which is quite unsatisfying and a little too childish or teenagish.
The resolution of the crime is quite thin and short and thus a little unsatisfying. It's a good read, but I know she can do better.

Most mystery stories focus on either the detectives or the plot. End in Tears is a nice exception in that the crime context and the incidental characters are also a focus. The result is a very satisfying story that will leave you thinking deeply about the vulnerability of those who want to become mothers.
Here are the three major story lines:
1. Amber Marshalson, an unwed teenage mother, is murdered by being bashed in the head as she walks home after a night out with friends. The investigation soon reveals that Amber had been a target of an earlier attempt that had led to a similar car being smashed by a weight dropped from above. Who killed Amber is Chief Inspector Wexford's first focus. The investigation turns up that Amber was involved in some seemingly illicit activity. What had she been up to? Detective Inspector Burden is convinced that it's drugs, but Wexford is skeptical. The investigation is further complicated when her seeming partner is also murdered.
