The Water's Lovely is more about demonstrating a life philosophy than it is a mystery. If you are looking for a rewarding mystery, this book probably won't satisfy. If, however, you are looking for an interesting novel with unexpected plot developments, you'll enjoy your read.
Ms. Rendell displays a world that's very dangerous to women where they need to seize advantages wherever they can and protect themselves in as many ways as possible. Rendell's women also have to become cold-hearted if they are to win what they want through taking timely actions. The book's main strength is in using plot development to display the characters in considerable detail. The writing is quite well done except for a jumbled beginning that makes it a hard book to become comfortable with. If you make it through the first 100 pages or so, you'll find the story's flow works much better and you'll become engrossed in the action.

Ein Thriller, der den Namen einmal wirklich verdient, auch wenn hier ein subtiles Grauen vorherrscht. Im Mittelpunkt stehen zwei Schwestern, die ein schreckliches Ereignis in ihrer Jugend verbindet, ihr Verhältnis zueinander sowie zur geistig verwirrten Mutter, ihr Verhältnis zu den jeweiligen Verlobten....
Die Autorin schuf eine düstere, unheilvolle Stimmung, die sich durch das ganze Buch zieht und einen mitzittern läßt. Die Auflösung am Ende ist überraschend und man bleibt irgendwie traurig zurück.
Ruth Rendell wird immer besser - unbedingt lesen !

This is an engrossing tale of manipulation and misunderstanding - manipulation by parents, partners and a scheming "friend" to rich old people and misunderstanding between two devoted sisters. Although the plot relies on a few major coincidences, the story still grips the reader and the ending is truly unsettling and sad. Highly recommended - the only problem is that you will finish it far too soon. Also, the editing could have been more careful, there are a few minor inconsistencies such as Heather's former bedroom being converted to a kitchen early in the book but in use as someone else's bedroom a few chapters later, also some confusion between who lives upstairs and downstairs in the Sealands' converted home. Still an excellent read.
