Review on Cal
The book Cal written by Bernard Mac Laverty in 1983 is a story that describes the conflict in Northern Ireland from the perspective of Cal who falls in love with the widow of a Protestant he has helped to kill.
In Northern Ireland, Catholics and Protestants are fighting each other since Protestant settlers came to the island, especially in the Northern part of the land after a Catholic rebellion in the 17th century. When the Republic of Ireland was founded in 1921, the Protestants were afraid of losing power as a minority and decided that Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom. Since that, Catholics of the IRA and Protestant militants are fighting each other to be able to decide on their countrys future although in recent times, there seems to be an appeasement in the conflict on the way.
But is there a possibility to give an overview of such a complex problem in a small book? The author tries it with his protagonist, Cal, who is disgusted by ...

This book is about love and hate. Overall it's about the conflict in Northern Ireland. Cal is depressed and so is Marcella. Between the two grows a strange love affair. It was interesting to read but also rather complicated because of the Northern Conflict which I haven't understood until now. I'm not so impressed about the book but I don't regret reading it. I liked the ending because it is like in reality. There cannot only be love, peace and happiness as most novels seem to suggest.

Ich bin ja eigentlich recht hart im nehmen, was Schullektüre angeht. Selbst Klassikern, bei denen alle anderen genervt aufstöhnen, kann ich immer noch was gutes abgewinnen, ich lese gerne auf Englisch und überhaupt sehr viel und sehr freiwillig.
Aber...Cal:
Im Prinzip klingt es ja gut, ein junger Protagonist, Irland, IRA, Konflikte, Liebe und weil aus den 70ern/80ern auch noch recht aktuell, im Vergleich zu den Sachen, die man sonst in der Schule vorgesetzt bekommt.
Leider ist das Buch absolut todlangweilig. Es liest sich wie ein deutsches Jugendbuch aus den 70ern, das ein Pastor oder Sonderschullehrer geschrieben hat. Bei dem Hintergrund hätte man doch so viel draus machen können, viel spannenderes, mehr Konflikte, aber nein...
Es gibt zwar viele Konfliktsituationen, die aber absolut nicht spannend gestaltet sind. Die Figuren sind flach und eindimensional (eben Jugendbuch), die ganze Angelegenheit am Ende einfach zu moralisch.

Das Buch ist eine sehr gute Aufarbeitung des Konflikts in Nordirland. Auch wenn es schon Anfang der 80er geschrieben wurde, ist es immer noch aktuell. Die Charaktere sind überzeugend dargestellt, die Geschichte ist plausibel und nachvollziehbar. Diese Ausgabe eignet sich besonders gut für den Unterricht in der Schule: neben einer Einführung und einer Chronologie der Ereignisse in Nordirland enthält das Buch einen umfangreichen Vokabelanhang mit Fragen zum Text, Zusammenfassungen der einzelnen Kapitel und Darstellungen der verschiedenen Charaktere. Sehr zu empfehlen!
