She is tended to by a man she never sees: a man who makes the promise that he will eventually kill her "like the others". Abbie is forced to re-examine aspects of her identity, her career and the dying relationship she had with her boyfriend. The struggle for survival is physical and mental. If French's compelling novel owes more than a little to John Fowles' masterpiece The Collector, it is none the worse for that. Bewertung: - überraschendes Ende
Die Spannung wird bis zum Schluss gesteigert und man fragt sich fast die gesamte Zeit über, wie es zu Ende gehen wird. Das Ende ist sehr überraschend. Ich musste das Buch an einem Tag zu Ende lesen.

Bewertung: - Spannend bis zur letzten Seite
Mit dem Buchklappentext bin ich hier erst mal etwas in die Irre gelaufen und hatte nach den ersten paar Seiten gegrübelt, wie man diese Geschichte noch 250 Seiten weiter erzählen will. Aber das Buch entwickelt sich schnell völlig anders, als zunächst erwartet und nimmt einen mit auf eine spannende Achterbahnfahrt. Es ist fast unmöglich etwas zum Plot zu sagen, ohne damit etwas vom Spannungsbogen zu vernichten. Daher nur sehr allgemeine Kommentare. Die Geschichte hat zwar ein oder zwei Momente, wo es etwas in die Länge gezogen wirkt (oder vielleicht sind dies auch Pausen zum Durchschnaufen). Aber diese kurzen Momente sind nicht wirklich schlimm und man ist ohnehin getrieben vom Wunsch zu erfahren, wie es weiter geht, so dass man hier problemlos drüber hinweg liest. Man fühlt und leidet mit der Heldin und möchte das Buch bald nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Und in typischer Nicci French Manier überstürzen sich die Ereignisse zum Ende hin ... ein tolles Buch für verregnete Nachmittage, ... weiter

Bewertung: - Realistic and uncomfortable
Nicci French is really able to create realistic situations that make you freeze. I could not put down the book while Abbie was in the dangerous hands of the stranger. Later on in the book I found it kind of boring but the end is very gripping again. I will definitely read more of Nicci French`s books.

Bewertung: - This is not the Nicci French i know
I've read most of Nicci French's books so far, and this one is really different from the other stories.

Well, of course you find some "Nicci French-characteristic" elements in this book, but overall it's really a very, very average story. The whole story can be told on about 50 pages, the rest of the book is filled with endless descriptions of trivial things. Most of the things told, have nothing to do with the main story, the descriptions of the characters are also just boring.

Within the last pages it's getting interesting, mainly because of the fact that finally something start to happen. The end is not a big surprise and comes very abruptly.

This is not the Nicci French i know, this book is completly different from the wonderful thrilling stories like "Beneath the Skin" or "Land of the Living".

So if you are not an absolute Nicci French Fan, who wants to read anything from them... just look out for another book of them.

Bewertung: - Gefesselt, die Augen verbunden, hineinversetzt!
Auch wenn ich das lesen englischsprachiger Literatur als eher mühsam empfinde, ist dieses Buch von Nicci French schon bald zu einem meiner Lieblings-Werke geworden. Wie bei kaum einer anderen Story wird der Leser gewissermaßen gezwungen, sich in die Rolle der gefangenen Person, welcher die Augen verbunden wurden, hineinzuversetzen. Schon nach wenigen Seiten entwickelt sich ein Gefühl, als sein man es selbst, der gefesselt und mit verbundenen Augen völlig hilflos zu verstehen versucht, was um einen herum passiert. Eine sehr zu empfehlendes Buch!
