Amazon.com:
Such is Ian McEwan's genius that, despite rambling nature walks and the naming of birds, his subject matter remains hermetically sealed in the hearts of two people.

It is 1962 when Edward and Florence, 23 and 22 respectively, marry and repair to a hotel on the Dorset coast for their honeymoon. They are both virgins, both apprehensive about what's next and in Florence's case, utterly and blindly terrified and repelled by the little she knows. Through a tense dinner in their room, because Florence has decided that the weather is not fine enough to dine on the terrace, they are attended by two local boys acting as waiters. The cameo appearances of the boys and Edward and Florence's parents and siblings serve only to underline the emotional isolation of the two principals. Florence says of herself: "...she lacked some simple mental trick that everyone else had, a mechanism so ordinary that no one ever mentioned it, an immediate sensual connection to people and events, and to her own needs and desires...."

They are on the cusp of a rather ordinary marital undertaking in differing states of readiness, willingness and ardor. McEwan says: "Where he merely suffered conventional first-night nerves, she experienced a visceral dread, a helpless disgust as palpable as seasickness." Edward, having denied himself even the release of self-pleasuring for a week, in order to be tip-top for Florence, is mentally pawing the ground. His sensitivity keeps him from being obvious, but he is getting anxious. Florence, on the other hand, knows that she is not capable of the kind of arousal that will make any of this easy. She has held Edward off for a year, and now the reckoning is upon her.

McEwan is the master of the defining moment, that place and time when, once it has taken place, nothing will ever be the same after it. It does not go well and Florence flees the room. "As she understood it, there were no words to name what had happened, there existed no shared language in which two sane adults could describe such events to each other." Edward eventually follows her and they have a poignant and painful conversation where accusations are made, ugly things are said and roads are taken from which, in the case of these two, the way back cannot be found. Late in Edward's life he realizes: "Love and patience--if only he had them both at once--would surely have seen them both through." This beautifully told sad story could have been conceived and written only by Ian McEwan. --Valerie Ryan

Durchschnittliche Bewertung: out of 5 stars

Bewertung: 5 out of 5 stars - Schon wieder: Große Literatur

Bewertung: 5 out of 5 stars - Beautifully told
This is an affecting description of misunderstandings between a naive young couple on their wedding night; told alternately from their parallel points of view leading the reader to feel sympathy for both. The story is set just before the supposed love revolution and will have resonances for older readers, but I think most people will empathize with the couple's anxieties. The writing is wonderfully fluent in evoking feelings and left me wishing that this short book had been longer. In the hardback edition the print is a good size and very clear with wider than average line-spacing -- a boon for reading in poor light. I would also recommend reading The Fates by Tino Georgiou, if you haven't already. A truly superb novel.

Bewertung: 5 out of 5 stars - 4:1 Favorit...

"They were young, educated, and both virgins on this their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual differences was plainly impossible" (3). Edward kann es kaum erwarten, dass nun nach mehr als einem Jahr endlich "the most sensitive portion of himself would reside, however briefly, within a naturally formed cavity inside this cheerful, pretty, formidably intelligent woman" (6f.). ... weiter

Bewertung: 5 out of 5 stars - Ian McEwan is a master of his craft
Others have set the scene, so only my comment: "On Chesil Beach" is a meticulously written story--not an extraneous word--that is moving, gripping, saddening: 166 pages that take no sides. I had to restrain myself not to read it in one go; instead I stopped at the end of each part and was burning to go on. This was the first book of Ian McEwan I'd read, but it won't be the last.

Bewertung: 2 out of 5 stars - A Talented Wordcrafter Describes an Improbable Honeymoon
If you are easily seduced by beautiful sentences, you'll feel On Chesil Beach is a five-star book. If you love exploring inner dialogue, you'll be even more pleased with this book.

If, however, you like your stories to be compelling because of their relevance and interest to your own life, you'll wonder why in the world Mr. McEwan chose to write about this particular problem of poor communications in the context of 1962. As you delve deeper into the book, you'll be even more puzzled by the book's pivotal event and the characters' reactions to it.

The short book (neither novella nor full novel) is organized in five parts that seem much like the acts in a Greek tragedy. The opening scene shows a couple dining in their room at an inn. "They were young, educated, and both virgins on this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible." The second act describes how they met. The third act takes place in their ... weiter
