Bewertung: - Überkonstruiert
"The Sleeping Doll" hat erfrischenderweise nicht mehr das ausgelutschte Duo Rhyme/Sachs im Zentrum, sondern die unverbrauchte Kathryn Dance. Als dem hochintelligenten, mehrfachen Mörder Pell die Flucht aus dem Gefängnis glückt, muss die Verhaltensspezialistin Kathryn eine Reise in Pells Vergangenheit antreten und die diversen Frauen seiner Kommune aufsuchen, aber auch das einzige Opfer, das mit dem Leben davonkam...

Die Handlung ist erst mal spannend und überzeugend. Pell scheint ständig Kathryn eine Nasenlänge voraus zu sein, und seine Wirkung auf Frauen kommt glaubhaft rüber. Im letzten Viertel des Romans nimmt die Handlung dann eine unerwartete Wendung nach der anderen, und ab da wird die Überkonstruiertheit der Handlung offenbar. Die allerletzte Wendung schließlich schießt an Unglaubwürdigkeit wirklich den Vogel ab, was die Schilderungen von Pells Persönlichkeit, Cleverness und Vergangenheit während der vorangegangenen 550 Seiten betrifft, und entwertet den ... weiter

"The Sleeping Doll" features Kinesics expert & CBI agent Kathryn Dance, who has been introduced in Deaver's latest Lincoln-Rhyme novel The Cold Moon: A Lincoln Rhyme Novel (Lincoln Rhyme Novels). She helped Rhyme and his team to catch the Clockmaker. Although Dance consults Rhyme for a forensic analysis once, "The Sleeping Doll" seems to be Dance's debut in her own series:

Daniel Pell was the leader of some kind of cult, living together with three females and another man as a "Family". He has been convicted and incarcerated eight years ago for the brutal murder of the Croyton family - a family of four. The then prosecuting DA dubbed him "The Son of Manson" due to the similarity in lifestyle and crime. Kathryn has to interrogate Pell because of an unsolved murder predating the Croyton-family murders, which he might be responsible for. After the interrogation at a courthouse Pell escapes, goes into hiding and on a killing spree. Dance enlists the help of the three women who were ... weiter

Bewertung: - Absolutely gripping. One of Deaver's best
I never really got into the Lincoln Rhyme books but Agent Katherine Dance is much different. From the first page, I got sucked into Deaver's story full of death, duplicity and cunning and I couldn't stop until the last page.

Dance arrives at a low security prison to interview convicted killer and cult leader Daniel Pell who has been implicated in a new murder. After briefly interviewing him, she realises that he intends to escape. But before she can stop him, Pell has broken out, killing his two guards and a police officer.

Dance is then put in charge of the manhunt to recapture Pell at all costs. Helping her are her two long-time colleagues Michael O'Neil and T.J. But she is also sent a FBI agent from Washington who specialises in cults.

It doesn't take long for Pell to get back to his old ways, murdering anyone who gets in his way and brainwashing the vulnerable women around him to do his bidding. Despite expectations to the contrary, Pell stays ... weiter

Bewertung: - Direkter Ableger aus Rhyme/Sachs
In "Der gehetzte Uhrmacher" begegneten Lincoln Rhyme und Amelia Sachs der Kinesologin Kathryn Dance, die dem zunächst ein wenig ablehnenden Lincoln hilfreich unter die Arme greifen konnte. In diesem Roman hat sie nun ihren eigenen Fall.

Mittlerweile ist sie beim CBI - California Bureau of Investigation - und tritt dort in erster Linie als Verhörspezialistin auf. In diesem Zusammenhang wird ihr der Kultmörder Daniel Pell vorgeführt, der sich wegen eines vor beinahe zehn Jahren in der Gegend begangenen Mordes verantworten soll. Kurz nach dem Verhör gelingt im die Flucht aus dem etwas leichter gesicherten Bezirksgefängnis und dabei kommen einige Beamte zu schwerem Schaden.

Entschlossen nehmen Kathryn mit ihrem Team die Ermittlungen und die Verfolgung auf und stellen dabei fest, dass es wirklich schwierig ist zu entscheiden, wer im Leben bei wem die Fäden zieht.

Bis etwa gegen die Mitte ist der Roman ein wenig schleppend geschrieben und die Figuren kommen ... weiter
