Poland was the most incredible book i've ever read. It captures the spirit and mind of the polish people to perfection , From Castle Gorka , To the Tatars , it chronicles the defeat and rebirth (many times) of the country and its people , i would recommend it to ANYONE and everyone .

I adore all of James Michener's books, and rate them all highly, but I think that this is his finest work. It has all the usual grandeur of his other works, but maybe because it is a history of an area about which I know so little, I find the story utterly mesmerising.
There are of course elements of the story that we are familiar with, such as the horror of war, but even with the grand historical elements that Mr Michener weaves so well into his tales, I think it is the characters that hold the narrative together. And I think that this novel has the strongest and most believable characters of all his works.
The story and the lineage of the main characters flow wonderfully, and all in all, it is a very satisfying book.

This book was a sheer delight to read. I have never read a book yet by Michener that I haven't liked! The chapter "The Terror" was a harrowing account of Nazi atrocities, and also recounts one mans terror in the concentration camps. I would recomend it to anyone

I read this book because my wife is Polish and I wanted to share with my children their herritage. The book gave me insight into Europe and some of its longstanding conflicts. The Holocoust of World War II is just one of a string of holocousts. I was amazed at Sweden's behavior during its conquest and slaughter of Poland. It helped me to understand what happened in Kosovo. Michener's mix of history and fiction was at times confusing. His fictional characters seemed so real when compared to historical figures. I would recommend a continuous review of the list of who is real and who is not given at the front of the book. Overall it was a good book which gives a flavor of Poland and Europe

Though not of Polish ancestry, I chose to read this book because I marvel at James Michener books, in general. I found it to be an excellent read, don't let my 4 star rating fool you. In fact, it will compete for the coveted "Goochie" award for best read book of the year. It was not as interesting a plot as Centennial or Chesapeake, but it definitely exposes the reader to some valuable history that is not normally seen in mainstream fiction. Worth the time to read it.
