This is truly an epic novel in the best sense of the word. As a focal point it concentrates on the development of the Jewish religion and the history of the Jewish people in todays Israel. An excavation takes place in a place not far from todays Akko. The archaeologists find things from different epochs from 10.000 B.C. to the Second World War and Michener tells the stories that are connected to these archaeological finds. And in what epic breath does the authors knows how to captivate the reader: almost from the beginning of time, pre-Christian times, the crusades, etc Michener tells this history wonderful and get to know a lot about Hebrew culture. Years of research must have gone into this fascinating novel which makes great reading. Somehow it reminded me of the novel Sarum in which the history pf a place is told over the millenniums, but Micheners novel came first and it is highly recommendable if you to be educated and be entertained at the same time on a high level by a mesmerizing ...

This book is about the evolution of a spot of land built around a life-sustaining source, over a timespan of several thousand years. That spot serves as a triggering point for one of humankinds primordial settlements, as a location of the toils and beliefs of pre-Jewish settlers building up a thriving town and as a site struggled for by Jews, Greek, Romans, Crusaders, Muslims, Turks, English and, again, Jews and Palestinians. In a drastic way, today this struggle is as intense as ever with the Israel conflict tearing the land and the confessions apart. Everybody who has read this book will have a deeper understanding of the relentlessness of the present state. One of the conclusions you can draw out of this 1000-page volume, is the endurance of the Jewish culture - in contrast to all the conquering cultures that were dominant for some decades or even centuries but eventually vanished. 'The Source' is the resurrection of the past and simultaneously the melding of the present into it. Highly recommendable.

This story of an archaeological dig at tell Makor, Israel is an astounding piece of literature! Michener uses accurate information to tell an inspiring story that takes the reader from 10,000 BC to AD 1964 in the history of the artifacts found at the tell. It includes wonderful stories that make the reader think and I reccommend it to anyone, especially those interested in archaeology.
