Alex de Waal has written an important book that can
work as an eye-opener to many, who are shocked by the
pictures of the Starving in Africa.
Putting problems like the correlation between democracy
and responsibility for famine and the advantages of foreign
aid for the local economy and the ruling elites in famine affected countries on the table deserves praise.
The book also offers a view on the aid industry and ineffectual UN organizations.
Yet regrettably - there is no practical solution to many of the questions raised short of letting people starve to death or sending troops to enforce responsible behaviour in 3rd world gouvernments - so many of the described mechanisms are still in place.
Sadly the author is well entrenched into the NGO industry as well, so one probably shouldn't expect too much from him.

This is a managable text, even for the novice in African current afairs and is written by the co-director of the Africa Rights group, based in London. De Waal contends that the causes of famine are invariably political and avoidable. He is critical of the activities to date of many aid agencies and observes that they have in many cases paradoxically perpetuated the very crises they have been seeking to end. This work has raised many questions for me and is a starting point for further reading on the subject of how aid to developing countries can be best delivered.
