This is an great tourism guide.
I think it is very good, the points how to get and come away. And how much for example train driving costs.

We bought this guide book for a 10 day car trip going from Rome to Florence, and spending a good deal of time in Tuscany. Generally I am a great fan of the Lonely Planet guidebooks, and have used their guide books on trips in Asia, Africa and Europe. However, the "Italy" guide book was one great deception. The only truly useful information was how to pre-book tickets for the florence museums, but if you are staying only in Florence or Rome a city guide of these cities will be more useful. We found that on several occasions information about opening hours, guided tours etc. was wrong, even for main attractions such as the vatican (this ought to be simple to verify!). Furthermore maps and adresses were often misleading or faulty, and when venturing outside of the main cities, the information on places to stay and eat, was very limited.
Alltogether, we found more useful information on the internet and using our michelin map than in this guidebook, and I cannot recommend it to anyone.

Bin leider sehr enttäuscht von diesem Reiseführer. Nach meinen beiden Italienreisen in diesem Jahr (2001) kann ich nur sagen, dass dieses Buch nicht an die hohen Standards von LP herankommt. Nützliche Tips waren eigentlich nur für die Haupttourismuszentren wie z.B. Florenz zu finden, die beigefügten Stadtpläne sind teilweise mehr als dürftig und Interessantes das nicht in den Bereich Kunstgeschichte fällt war kaum zu finden. Möchte man z.B. wärend seiner Tour auch mal 2-3 Tage am Meer ausspannen, wird man vergebens nach wirklich empfehlenswert dargestellten Plätzen suchen; beschrieben werden nur die gängigen Tourismuszentren wie etwa Rimini oder Amalfi (soll angeblich romantisch sein, sieht aber aus wie El Arenal), von denen dem Traveller ohnehin abzuraten ist.
Hinzukommt nach Aussage meiner englischen Reisebegleitung ein des Druckens nicht würdiges Englisch.
Insgesammt wohl nur für amerikanische/ australische Kulturtouris mit 14 Tagen Europa Aufenthalt zu empfehlen.

I just returned from a wonderful vacation trough Italy visiting Roma, Pisa, Firenze, Venezia, Siena, and Orvieto. The Lonely Planet Italy guide provided very useful information such as history, places to stay and eat, and other up to date pertinent information on each of these places (and more).
The Lonely Planet Italy guide is medium sized and is not heavy. It fits easily on a hand bag. This book is easy to use and understand. It is organized by region, and then by town. Each regional map highlights the most important tourist attractions.
The first two chapters: Facts about Italy and Facts for the Visitors; cover Italian culture, history, and local customs, and many valuable hints for the traveller. Reading this two chapters before leaving help us to prepare and plan our trip.
This book enhanced our travel experience 100%!

I've traveled with the 3rd edition of this guide in 97 through Naples, Rome, Florence, Siena, Venice & Verona. The guide was a trustworthy companion, especially the "where to eat" section. In Italy, because of the huge number of tourists that travel to this country, many restaurants are tourist traps - expensive & mediocre. However, you can found authentic & cheap restaurants in this guide, as well as more up-market places. If you search where to eat, first find if there are restaurants recomnded by the LP in your vicinity. I even marked the locations of these restaurants on the city maps I had, so I won't need to carry the guide (which is quite big) whenever I go out at evening.
