I think it's quite an interesting book and I enjoyed reading it. It shows well,how fast you can get into a tricky situation. It's interesting because you have the chance to see what's the situation in Nothern Ireland between the Catholics and the Protestants is like. there are lots of difficult words, so I think its good to have some lexical help for each page.
The film is a highlight, too.

Cal is a very well written book, and a important one to read, if you are interestedd on the problems Northen Ireland.
Cal is a young man who lives in Belfast. He is torn between the Protestants and the Catholics, this conflict shows intself less with a lot of political and historical information, but with a lot of feelings.
Cal has just left school, is unemployed and works for the IRA. So he got a lot of problems and the fact that he falls in love with Marcella, the widow of the man he helped shoot a year ago, doesn't help to find forgiveness and peace of mind. In fact it only brings forth a lot more problems for him.

My dislike against this book is caused by several reasons. First because we read it in class and so in little bits and I couldn't lose the feeling, that the same always happens . Cal hasn't got an opinion of his own or the strength to stick to it. So he and his Catholic "friends" do one crime after the other and he always feels guilty, while his friends don't know this word at all.
Then Cal falls in love with a women who also feels guilty, too, and they drawn together by their own persoanl despair and depression.
Another reason for my dislike is the awful film, which is really beneath all dignity. It's gloomy and jumps from scene to scene, and it destroys the last joy on this story.

This story may be an interesting and successful book. But I didn't notice it. For me it was hard and difficult to read. I couldn't understand why Cal (the main person) reacted the way he did, sometimes it was like a inexplicable mystery.
Cal is a strange person; of course he has experienced a lot hard things and it's hard to live at that place at that time (the 1980's), the political circumstances do influence a person's life.

CAL shows a young man's tradegy in Northern Ireland. Mac Laverty gave the psychological aspect a significant role. The characters are well formed.
It should be appreciated that the book does not sympathize with either the Catholic or the Protestant side of the conflict. It rather describes the terrible effects of the civil war the population has to suffer under.
I think it also shows that the youth can hardly avoid being pulled to one side of the conflict.
